De enorme vlucht van technische ontwikkelingen in de geneeskunde leidt tot vele morele vragen. Traditionele en vastliggende, 'eeuwig en absoluut' geldende morele uitgangspunten lijken te statisch te zijn om richting te geven aan de voortdurend veranderende mogelijkheden. Volgens velen leidt dat tot het failliet van die uitgangspunten. Steeds meer mensen zijn ervan overtuigd dat morele oordelen tot stand komen onder invloed van historische en culturele omstandigheden. Er wordt in de ethiek dan ook in toenemende mate een beroep gedaan op 'ervaring'. Dit lijkt noodzakelijk tot moreel relativisme te leiden: morele oordelen worden tot een kwestie van persoonlijke opinie en komen niet meer op rationele wijze tot stand. In ONGEREGELDE MORAAL zoekt de filosofe Lieke van der Scheer naar een alternatief ervaringsbegrip dat als kern kan functioneren van een ethiek die wél normatief is. Alleen zo'n ethiek heeft namelijk praktische relevantie voor het menselijk handelen in het algemeen en voor de praktijk van de gezondheidszorg in het bijzonder. Op basis van het pragmatische ervaringsbegrip van de Amerikaanse filosoof John Dewey stelt zij een normatieve ethiek voor die niet volgens vaste regels is bepaald, maar de nadruk legt op kritisch en objectief onderzoek van gedrag. Met een dergelijke ongeregelde moraal kan ook in de ethiek geleerd worden van eerdere ervaringen. Van der Scheer werkt deze stelling uit aan de hand van de vraag of nog levende anencefalen - kinderen geboren zonder (hogere) hersenen - als orgaandonor mogen dienen. Daarbij gaat zij de confrontatie met ethici als Inez de Beaufort en Heleen Dupuis niet uit de weg.
